Abstract

The process of adopting and implementing a new, high-quality mathematics curriculum (HQMC) can beboth exciting and challenging. A HQMC is one that provides coherent and standards-based mathematical concepts within and across grades while also providing authentic opportunities and teacher guidance for supporting students to engage in the processes of problem solving, mathematics reasoning, communication, connections, and representations. Selecting such a curricular resource on its own does not guarantee high-quality teaching and learning. The benefits of a HQMC are achieved through a successful implementation process which has both benefits and challenges. How teachers interpret and enact the curriculum matters, and how students experience the curriculum determines how much they benefit from it and consequently, the quality of their outcomes. It is therefore important for districts and schools to know what to expect when implementing a new HQMC and how to facilitate the process in order to achieve the full benefits. This brief addresses the benefits and challenges associated with implementing a newhigh-quality mathematics curricular resource, with recommendations for how schoolscan facilitate the implementation process to best support teachers and students.
