Abstract

This thesis is concerned with the design of a place for leisure tune activities for the city of Alton, Illinois. The project is to consist of facilities which are as follows: 1) community center building; 2) outdoor swimming pool; 3) ice rink; 4) baseball fields; 5) man-made lake. Of principle concern with the city of Alton and of this thesis will be the design of the community center building; and, it is this part of the project that will be developed in detail. However, to make the design of the community center a much more meaningful solution it will be necessary to become involved with the total scope of the problem – the relationship of all the facilities to one another and the site – in order for the city of Alton to eventually attain a total environment of leisure time activities. The project is to be developed in stages. First on the list for development is the community center building, which is to be included in the city’s 1969 bond issue. At present the city, which has a population of approximately 430,000, has no such facility, for which there is a demanding need. The remaining facilities stated above are to be built in order of need depending on funds available. The community center is a multi-purpose building with facilities catering to all age groups, and why cany member or members of the community can use and benefit from tin their work or time of leisure. As such the building becomes an integrated social center of human interactions; and, it is this feeling of community participation and human interaction that the design of the building should transmit to the user. But, at the same time, the building should maintain the necessary separation of functions where needed for the control of noise and other distractions which may be disturbing for the person reading a book
