Abstract
In this essay, I give a first-person analysis of how my art practice has evolved over the past two years. In addition, I introduce the impactful roles theatricality and monstrosity play in my body of work. While the theatrical is a powerful device for me to create work that captivates the audience, the monstrous reflects my anxieties about my cultural values being thrown out of the norm by the pandemic. Through combining theatricality and monstrosity, my work puts an emphasis on visual symbology, emotional energy, and participatory experience. I argue the theatrical and the monstrous can produce artworks that challenge our cultural values and evoke strong emotional responses from the viewer.
