Abstract
Design proposal for a city court house with the following parameters: This building is to be erected by the tax payers of a wealthy farming county, and is intend ed to be one of its public monuments. It should be, therefore, of a monumental character and every effort made to express in it dignity and simplicity well defined proportions, purity of detail, and appropriate materials. It should also be an ex- ample of good, sound construction. It is to be located in the center of a city known as the county seat, on a plot of ground 400' in width by 500' in length. The front of the plot faces a main thoroughfare of the city, while the back and two sides are bounded by streets of secondary importance. The site and surroundings should be carefully considered as the requirements of the building are such that it is not necessary to cover the entire plot. In fact, the character of the city and the neighborhood demands that a large portion of the grounds be devoted to lawns, gardens and parking space. The nature of the site and its surroundings should also, to a certain extent, determine the distribution of the entrances to the building, which should be governed by the importance of the streets upon which they face, and the features of the interior to which they give access. The circulation of halls and corridors should be direct and unmistakable, leading without confusion or unnecessary distance both to the staircases and elevators as well as to the various departments of the building.
