Abstract
This essay explores the American’s and the American-born Chinese’s impressions of China and Chinese culture from different perspectives. It mainly focuses on stereotypes, Chinese figures in Hollywood movies, and family dynamics. This essay and data also come from my own research, which involved conducting twenty interviews with my friends, including eight American-born Chinese (all of whom are second-generation immigrants) and twelve American-born individuals (all of them Caucasian, but from various backgrounds). It then focuses on my picture book, BOTH SIDES, representing how the different thinking modes and the specific cultural differences influenced me as a Chinese illustrator working and learning in the US.
