Abstract

An equiatomic NbVZr substrate was formed using arc melting. Using direct laser deposition, various amounts of Nb was added to the substrate. The microstructure of the sample was studied using SEM. Three distinct regions were found. There were two dendritic phases, one rich in Nb and one rich in Zr. The interdendritic region was high in V and appears to be the Laves phase. The Nb dendrite area fraction increases with increasing overall Nb percentage. The Nb dendrites are very likely a disordered BCC structure.
