Problem Statement

A large portion of our products have glass doors. In development testing we have to simulate door openings per ASHRAE testing procedures. This basically means the doors have to open on a specific schedule and stay open for a specific time. Our current testing uses a fixture that opens the doors per the ASHRAE schedule but what we do not have is a way to monitor, in real time, if there is any issue with the door opening during the test. Sometimes the door fixture does not open the door, or the door opens and stays open for longer than required. Both scenarios can make a 24 hour test run invalid and will have to rerun the test. We can use indirect data to see when a door opens but it's not a clear indication of the issue and it does not give enough data to show how long the issue may have happened for. This project would be to review our door testing procedure and develop a mobile controller that can be added to our test cases to monitor door openings during test runs. The device would need to record if the door opened as expected and if it closed as expected, if there was an issue, then it needs to signal some kind of alarm that there was a door failure
