Abstract

The Pana Coal Mining Strike of 1898 and 1899 was considered by Mr. Ross, secretary of the Illinois State Bureau of Labor Statistics, as being a contest for the preservation of the mining industry.l The importance of this labor disturbance lies in the fact that upon its success or failure hinged the permanance of the interstate coal mining agreements as a method of settling disputes and determining mining conditions. It is the purpose of this thesis to relate the history of this strike, its origin and development, and the subsequent results of the "Big Trouble," as the local people term the strike.

Note: The thesis documents the 1898–1899 coal miners’ strike at Pana, Illinois and includes historical terminology and quotations that may be outdated or offensive today. It is provided for historical and scholarly context and does not imply endorsement of the perspectives expressed.
