Summary
More than 53 million Americans are informal caregivers. These family members, friends, and acquaintances provide social, medical, transportation, and other support to individuals because of illness or disability without getting paid. Additionally, at least 2 million grandparents, not counting other kinship caregivers, provide care for children who cannot remain with their parents.1
