Description
The former Cabanne neighborhood recognized by the City of St. Louis encompassed the area between Kingshighway Boulevard and the city limits, and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive and Delmar Boulevard. In the 1970s, historian Norbury L. Wayman wrote a detailed history of Cabanne in his book about St. Louis neighborhoods. The Cabanne area has since been subdivided into four smaller neighborhoods, which are today known as Academy-Sherman Park, West End, Visitation Park and Hamilton Heights.
Although Cabanne is no longer used to describe this area of the city, our neighborhood team was interested in exploring our shared history as part of the former Cabanne area. This publication is the result of collaborative research among residents of the West End, Visitation Park and Academy.
We hope that our project will provide a resource for the people of our neighborhoods to learn about the interesting people who lived here and the significant events that occurred here. We hope this will help strengthen community ties across neighborhood boundaries and connect local historical assets within our neighborhoods to enhance pride in a shared history as a path toward a shared future. We also hope our project will extend awareness of the unique stories that make up this area’s history beyond our neighborhoods.
Even with growing awareness and momentum to address the divides that exist in St. Louis, the reality is that Delmar Boulevard remains a powerful psychological dividing line. By focusing on the history of the Cabanne area north of Delmar Boulevard, we were interested in discovering the deeper history of where we live. Ultimately, we hope this project will help to create a narrative that encourages people to venture into our neighborhoods. Come, explore and learn about our history.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) for sponsoring this project and to Kevin McKinney at SLACO for his willingness to support our proposal by partnering with our team. In particular, we want to thank Dr. Mark Abbott, for his generous contributions to the project, as well as our workshop lecturers: Emily Jaycox, Andrew Hurley, Jasmin Aber, Nini Harris, Adele Heagney, Kristine Runberg Smith and Jeffrey Smith. We would also like to thank the neighborhood representatives who attended the workshops offered during the first phase of the program as well as those who applied to continue the process and develop a neighborhood history project during the second phase. Lastly, we want to give a special thanks to the Missouri Historical Society for their guidance to the Neighborhood Team throughout the project.
