Material and its Properties
Gauing travertine • Light to medium-brown, sometimes white-brownish • porous, laced with holes and pockets created by bubbling carbon dioxide • intensively patterned, with many fossil fragments encrusted in algae and cavities formed by calcite crystals. • relatively soft, can be cut with a conventional electric saw and diamond blade.
Location of Manufacturer
Gauingen, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany
It is a local material, the ecological balance of a construction material is influenced by the length of the transport route. So it is more energy-efficient to operate quarries locally. Tumbled travertine has an older, antique look and provides ample traction for outdoor surfaces. It is relatively soft but durable. The pocked surface represents added maintenance issues.
