Summary

Students will prompt GenAI tools to find relevant engineering standards that might apply to their mechanical engineering design project, then they must evaluate the responses.

Extended Summary

This is based on a Library Instruction support session for the Mechanical Engineering & Material Design Class (MEMS411). For MEMS411, ChatGPT and other GenAI tools can be helpful for quickly finding relevant engineering standards, which are documentation of engineering practices including rules, techniques, and conditions for engineering design. There are inconsistencies across issuing agencies, variations in subject headings and keywords, and no centralized databases, which makes locating the relevant standards difficult for even the most seasoned teachers. The MEMS411 students prompt GenAI to identify possible standards for their design project. This may yield several standard numbers and summaries, which students must then fact check against standard-issuing agencies or perform a Google Search to determine if the standard is legitimate or an AI hallucination.

Students could also use GenAI for suggestions on identifying possible academic “experts,” and we could then use Scopus, Web of Science, or even Google Scholar to verify their publishing history.

Student Learning Objectives

Students will be able to critically evaluate the reliability, validity, and relevance of information sources.
