Students consider and dicuss key literacies when using generative AI tools.
Extended Summary
Students are provided the attached handout with an overview of introductory AI Literacy concepts, including
- very basic introduction intended for novice users.
- potential risks and ethical considerations
- data security and safety considerations
- how to acknowledge and attribute when using generative AI
After reading this document, students work in small groups to discuss each of the topics.
Students are also asked:
- Had they considered these topics when previously using generative AI tools?
- Given these considerations, would this alter their choices when using generative AI in the future? If so, how?
If class time allows, each group of students try submitting the same query or prompt (any relevant to the course topic) to different generative AI tools (including difference instances and versions of named tool, such as Chat GPT and WashU instance of ChatGPT) and then discuss the results.
Student Learning Objectives
- Become a more informed user of generative AI tools
- Understand how to cite and provide proper scholarly attribution when utilizing generative AI tools
