Abstract
In light of the 29% decrease in LGBTQ+ representation on television as reported by GLAAD for the 2022-2023 season, this paper explores the role that varying forms of media play in the identity formation and mediation of queer and marginalized individuals. The author does so by positioning Fanzines, or ‘zines’, from the punk-rock movement and the production of digital content within a feedback loop of identity mediation. The loop comprises the stages of Representation, Consumption, Position and Projection, and Production. By combining personal narrative with theoretical analysis, the author explores how media serves as a vital space for marginalized communities to explore and express their identities. The paper also addresses the necessity for diverse and accurate media representation and illustrates the do-it-yourself (DIY) ethos’ role in providing marginalized individuals with platforms to explore and validate their identities.
