Abstract
This Bachelor of Fine Arts statement outlines my practice as a response to Barthes’ community of images, Sontag’s image world, and Enwezor’s empire of images. Although the images that make up a collective’s understanding of itself are publicly shared, their private meaning is unstable and conflicting. My work interprets photography as a dispersed media, through materials associated with slowness and subjectivity, like painting, printmaking, and embroidery. Through appropriated image and text, my work explores both the hyper-visualized and the invisible aspects of state and institutional violence, primarily by looking at the sites that make up my home.
