Abstract
Three classes of RNA are made in exponentially growing E. coli cells: messenger RNA (mRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and transfer RNA (tRNA). mRNA possesses the characteristics which were first proposed by Jacob and Monod (1961) as necessary for an intermediary in the transfer of information from DNA to protein.
