In An Education Saved My Life, Professor David A. Patterson Silver Wolf (Adelv unegv Waya) narrates his path from a difficult early family life, his introduction to alcohol and drugs as an adolescent, and a directionless early adulthood overshadowed by chemical dependency, to a series of events and encounters that transformed his life. Dr. Patterson Silver Wolf attributes not only the substance abuse, but the many turns that led to it, to what he calls a “poor belief system.” As the title suggests, by contrast, he attributes much of the success he has experienced since then to his education, but attributes his success in education not to innate intelligence. “A strong belief system,” he asserts, “is much more powerful than a strong IQ.” He describes the process of building a strong belief system—for him, not only a set of beliefs for him to stand by, but a set of people and a community that believed in and supported him. Unlike many biographies, Dr. Patterson Silver Wolf does not simply relate experiences and offer conjecture as to personal motivations or possible causes, but weaves in relevant sociological research from his field of expertise as it touches on turns in the narrative, making his own life—and success—a case study, and a model for others to follow.

These notes are an introduction to set theory and topology. They are the result of teaching a two-semester course sequence on these topics for many years at Washington University in St. Louis. Typically the students were advanced undergraduate mathematics majors, a few beginning graduate students in mathematics, and some graduate students from other areas that included economics and engineering.
The usual background for the material is an introductory undergraduate analysis course, mostly because it provides a solid introduction to Euclidean space and practice Rn with rigorous arguments — in particular, about continuity. Strictly speaking, however, the material is mostly self-contained. Examples are taken now and then from analysis, but they are not logically necessary for the development of the material. The only real prerequisite is the level of mathematical interest, maturity and patience needed to handle abstract ideas and to read and write careful proofs. A few very capable students have taken this course before introductory analysis (even, rarely, outstanding university freshmen) and invariably they have commented later on how material eased their way into analysis.

The 1988 Dress Rehearsal Census, conducted in St. Louis city in preparation for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing, offers a unique opportunity to assess recent trends in black-white housing segregation in St. Louis city.

Metropolisation and urban sprawl are recurrences of recent developments in European territories, and particularly the Mediterranean. However, these phenomena often oppose the idea of environmental conservation and respect for natural and economic equilibriums. CREPUD-MED has allowed a group of European experts, local elected officials, academics, architects, planners, geographers, sociologists… to combine their skills and to question the notion of territorial development understood as a “project-process.”
Four case-studies of four European regions are presented within: Val de Durance (Région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), Funo (Provincia di Bologna), Metropolitan Region of Barcelona and Eleonas (Athens); in the form of an atlas, as a knowledge instrument of the territory; and a project book, where different strategies that can lead to a contemporary and interterritorial project are proposed.
