The goal is to develop a Materials Library database which will allow users to search for a material using basic design characteristics, narrow their search through specific filters, and compare similar materials.
Cut and folded metal sheets in horizontal lines offer patters on the façade
Located on the sloped hill in the forest, the use of stone on the façade creates a strong dialog between the building and the surrounding natural landcape. Stony façade anchored the building to the ground, giving durabiliy and sturdiness on its structure.

Properties of material: A wall of re-purposed Oil Barrels was used to create a wall on a narrow Paris Street. This installation was done to protest the Berlin Wall.

It is composed of two sloped metal structures that contain separate programs within the police department. A pre-engineered metal building is the location of “nonessential” storage and support, while the “essential” operations and offices are held within a metal building with an eye-catching transparent lobby and masonry base.
Material of interest: Cordwood masonry.
Material used: Cordwood Masonry is a traditional construction method where cordwood logs are laid sideways in a bed of mortar. The process is said to be low in carbon and highly insulating, due to the thickness of the walls
Properties of material: One of cordwood masonry’s biggest advantage for local builders is the easy accessibility of the materials. Wood does not need to be highly processed, and simple firewood is usually sufficient. Mortar mixes are also easily accessible to the general public, which is why cordwood masonry is popular in rural, self-built homes. It is also much cheaper than contracted homes, making it popular among do-it-yourself homebuilders. Materials can be acquired from local hardware stores, firewood suppliers, and masonry suppliers.
The first impression of this building would be seven golden wheat buttresses. And the actural material of this building is wheat straws. Known as agricultural discards, 95% of wheat straws and 5% environmental friendly adhesive made this unique material. And instead of burning these wheat straws and producing more CO2, it is more sustainable to make them into building materials.

The final graphite concept sketch drew inspiration from multiple patterns to create a form that was specific to the proportions and context of the expansion. Once the sketch was complete, a computer based algorithm converted the sketch’s tonal values into a 3-dimensional digital surface model of the façade. The resulting form grows out of the rigid, solid geometry of the existing building’s east façade with a single sweeping motion, and increases in complexity as it moves around the corner to the west, paying tribute to both Zahner’s past and future.

The double facade works like a trombe wall. It holds in heat in the winter (GREENHOUSE effect) and at the same time expel the heat and protect the building in the summer (VENTILATED facade)
