The goal is to develop a Materials Library database which will allow users to search for a material using basic design characteristics, narrow their search through specific filters, and compare similar materials.

Properties of material: Cast Iron Panels were digitally fabricated with a patterned cut out to let light into the top levels.
The concrete mix achieved the ultra-low shrinkage requirements, and cast-in-place concreted allowed for complex geometry to be achieved.

Properties of material: White concrete is used to throughout the project on both interior and exterior walls. the surface is smooth and the pattern is regulated, creating a controlled transition from space to space.

Properties of material: Corrugated steel is a weather resistant steel siding manufactured in a wave pattern for strength and rigidity. It looks great when combined with natural or engineered wood products.

Material used: Rammed earth
Properties of Material: The use of rammed earth provides a structural strength similar to concrete. Works as a great humidity barrier and installation. Easily found materials. In this case, materials were collected from within the city and ground down.
Material of interest: Ooya stone.
Material used: Ooya stone, steel, glass.
Properties of material: Unlike other stones, the Ooya stone is soft to touch with its softest portion- the ‘miso’- formed of soil trapped within it. It also has holes similar to a sponge with the ‘miso’ being the largest of these. Owing to these openings, the stone surface is rather broken up in its texture.

These concrete screens are arranged in various dynamic ways; leaning, elevated or floating and form the outer carapace to the house. Within this, courtyards are separated off by glass, which threads between the concrete screens. This brings the house in active and equivalent relationship with the landscape.

Properties of materials: Glass is used to provide views out to the mountain range from all areas within the building. At the sam time, this type of facade creates an interesting effect when the landscape reflects off the glass surfaces.

Properties of material: The steel skin is separated from an inner wall of glass and aluminum to permit light and views for people inside the space. The steel panels act to reduce heat gains in summer and insulate the interior in winter. The panels are also operable, allowing people to open them for additional ventilation and lighting.

Contemporary gallery façade will be made of aluminum, with perpendicular blades of ultra-thin specialty glass. Windows and skylights that punctuate the façade will be double glazed insulated glass uses high performance low-E (low emissivity) coating to minimize heat gain. An additional UV filtering coating of the glass further protects the art from damaging ultraviolet rays.

Properties of material: Canopy protects from the elements but lets in natural light. It is a non-toxic fluoropolymer and will not degrade during its useful life, but can be fully recycled.

The exterior to east and south is cast with the local lava stone, recalling the usual stone walls dividing the lands and protecting the houses all over the island landscape. On top a play with two moving cryptomeria wood volumes around the impluvium courtyard envelops the rooms and links also with the traditional added wood volumes seen all over the landscape.

Properties of material: Essentially an industrial product, the hedges can be deployed to build ‘green walls’. The growth process of ivy generally takes years to create a green building. With smart screens, the growth period is reduced.

Properties of material: All the material, both aluminium and plastic, is manufactured from a single extruded section, varied in placement and colour to give the appearance of multiple pieces.

Properties of material: Wood was chosen as the primary material for the project due its organic qualities as an exhaustible natural resource as well as its easy workability. Ultimately, the pavilion is shielded from solar radiation in the summer months and then consumes solar radiation throughout the winter. Indirect sunlight produces a subtle ambiance in the interior. Designed to be fabricated using CNC machines, mathematical equations determined the precise orientation of the panels for the most beneficial solar penetration.
